The Coffee Book Tag
Black | Name a series that’s tough to get into but has hardcore fans. Dana This is definitely all of the Shadowhunter series from Cassandra Clare. I fell behind with these books a long time ago, but I’ve been rereading the few books that I did read in order to tackle the rest of the books and finish some of the series. Kitty Dana and I are clearly on the same page for this tag because I picked The Shadowhunter Chronicles as well! Everyone who reads YA has probably been told to read one of Cassandra Clare’s shadowhunter series at some point. Admittedly, this series can be really hard to get into because the first books are not the best. I totally get why a lot of people pass it by, but I will never stop loving this series and all of it’s wonderful characters. They have a special place in my heart. |
Peppermint mocha | Name a book that gets more popular during the winter or a festive time of year. Dana One YA book that everyone is always talking about during the holidays is Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, which I haven’t read but I see it so much during the holidays. Kitty Dana and I have the same pick again! I love Dash and Lily's Book of Dares. I have read both this book and the sequel and I find them so charming and lovable. It certainly helps that Christmas is my absolute favorite holiday! |
Hot chocolate | What is your favorite children’s book? Dana I hate to be so predictable, Harry Potter. I mean I have a tattoo of it and everything. Kitty This is such a hard pick for me because I grew up reading tons of books and I had so many favorites. I think one of my favorites will always have to be Ella Enchanted though. My sister and I both loved this book and went on to read everything by Gail Carson Levine. |
Double shot of espresso | Name a book that kept you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Dana That had to be Grace and Fury by Tracy Banghart. I had a hard time putting this one down, which made it the perfect road trip read. Now I am dying for the sequel! Kitty I've got to go with This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab. It is probably the darkest and most intense YA book I’ve ever read and I was hooked the entire time. Victoria is a master of dark fantasy and heart-wrenching plot twists and This Savage Song had it all. |
Starbucks | Name a book you see everywhere. Dana Two books that I was seeing everywhere are The Cruel Prince and Strange the Dreamer, which is why I read them this summer. Now I am sitting here waiting very impatiently for their sequels. Kitty I heard about Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff from everyone before I finally picked it up myself. It took my way too long to read it, but when I did, I was completely swept away. I can’t wait to continue on with this series. |
That hipster coffee shop | Give a book by an indie author a shoutout. Dana An indie read that I am excited to get to from my TBR is Grave Things by Lindsay Mead, which follows a demon fighting exorcist who swept up in trouble when she gets hired by a new client. This sounds like a fun Halloween read and Lindsay is a great author that I love to support. Kitty Blackout by Kit Mallory is one of the only self-published books I’ve ever read but it has landed a spot as one of my favorite books of the year. It is a gripping dystopian story about queer and mentally ill kids trying to survive and form a found family in a world that keeps knocking them down. I loved each and every one of the characters in this story. |
Oops! I accidentally got decaf | Name a book you were expecting more from. Dana One book that I wanted so much more from was Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins. I loved her Hex Hall series and her latest release Royals, but I just felt like the magic and the characters of this story fell a bit flat for me. It was a fun read, but ugh my expectations were too high. Kitty Unfortunately, this was Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand. I had such high hopes for this book and it didn’t quite live up to them. I was excited for this book because about the ace and f/f rep, but the intended suspense and excitement of the story fell a bit flat for me. I did enjoy it and I’ll have my full review up later, but I really just thought there was way more potential here than execution. |
The perfect blend | Name a book or series that was both bitter and sweet but ultimately satisfying. Dana While this one is probably more sweet than bitter, I am going with Love & Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch. This one starts off very sad and follows the main character as she makes some disheartening discoveries about her parents. I think the sweet part is the romance, but also the theme of found family. Kitty This has to go to Unbroken: 13 Stories Starring Disabled Teens. This book was exactly what every anthology should be: diverse, gripping, emotional, and beautiful. So many of these stories were very personal to me and I cried my way through a few of them. In the end though, this anthology was honest and powerful. I can’t wait to everyone to get a chance to read it. |
