Highs and Lows
During February, I participated in Blackathon - a readathon focused on reading books about Black characters and by Black authors - for Black History Month. I'm so glad I did. I read so many books I don't think I would have normally picked up and found some awesome new favorites.
My highs definitely included The Poet X and Pride which each had truly amazing audiobooks. The Poet X has been winning all of the awards for very good reason and Pride was such an amazing retelling that was engaging from start to finish. For Everyone struck an amazing chord with me as well. I read the book and then, just a few days later, listened to the audiobook so I could play it for my mom. This is definitely a book I will keep coming back to. I took a break from the readathon to re-read Timekeeper, which is always a favorite, in order to gear up for the rest of the series. I'm so glad I loved it just as much as the first time. My most surprising favorite was Little & Lion. The summary of this book had given me some incorrect assumptions so I put off reading it... but it is now an absolute favorite. The sibling relationship and mental health representation were both amazing.
On the other hand... I really didn't enjoy Another Brooklyn. The writing style was really nice, so I really hope to read more by this author, but the story was all over the place and it was hard to know what the plot actually was. I didn't rate The Chaos of Longing because I knew it was a case of the book just not being for me. The poetry was beautiful, but a lot of it was explicit which I don't really enjoy.
