In order to celebrate #InternationalNonbinaryDay, I've compiled a list of some great non-binary and genderqueer authors that everyone should be reading. Which of these authors have you read before? Let me know in the comments!
Ana Mardoll [xie/xer] Ana Mardoll is a transgender author who has been self-publishing novels since 2012. Xer books have featured many queer characters, including Survival Rout which features a genderqueer character in the main romance. Most recently, Xie has released No Man or Woman Born. This short story collection came out on July 10th and features 7 fantasy stories with transgender and non-binary protagonists. |
Amy Rose Capetta [she/her] Amy Rose Capetta is a demigirl author who has published books with HMH Books, Viking, and Candlewick Press. Her upcoming release, The Brilliant Death, is an Italian-inspired fantasy with genderqueer characters. She has also teamed up with her partner Cori McCarthy to write a YA duology Once and Future which is a queer, sci-fi retelling of the legends of King Arthur. Cori McCarthy [they/them] Cori McCarthy is a non-binary author of several novels including their most recent YA release, Now a Major Motion Picture. They recently announced their nonfiction picture book about Arab American poet Kahlil Gibran and their co-written, YA duology Once and Future. Both are expected for publication in 2019. |
Gabe (Ava Jae) [they/them] Gabe is a non-binary author currently publishing under the name Ava Jae. They have published two books in a YA, sci-fi trilogy called Beyond the Red that follows an alien queen as she attempts to rule despite her people calling for her violent twin brother to take the throne. The third book in the series is set to release later this year. |
Alex Gino [they/them] Alex Gino is the non-binary author of the well known middle grade novel, George. George is a contemporary novel published in 2015 that features a trans girl main character. Their upcoming middle grade novel, You Don’t Know Everything, Jilly P!, is being released in September and features deaf, ASL using characters. |
Kheryn Callender [he/him & they/them] Kheryn Callender is a demiboy author who has written for middle grade and young adult audiences. His debut novel, Hurricane Child, released in March and was a magical realism story featuring queer characters and characters of color. His next novel, This is Kind of an Epic Love Story, is a YA rom-com featuring a m/m romance. |
